È difficile dare una definizione precisa di questa parola. Se dobbiamo considerarla in senso letterale, l’illustrazione è un disegno, una figura che ha il compito di spiegare un testo, illustrare, cioè mettere in luce (mettere i lustri).
Ma trovo che tutto ciò sia un po’ riduttivo. Un’illustrazione è qualcosa di più complesso, è un elemento visivo che racchiude in sé il senso di ciò che stiamo guardando e che, quando può, va anche oltre le parole scritte.
Dietro la realizzazione di un’illustrazione, anche la più semplice, c’è un grande lavoro di sintesi. Per me alla base dell’illustrazione c’è la sintesi, ciò non vuol dire che l’immagine stilisticamente debba essere sintetica, può anche essere ricca di elementi descrittivi, ma sintetizza un’immagine o un concetto.
